Keith Stein is a broadly experienced corporate, real estate and commercial attorney, business advisor and principal investor. He began his career as a corporate and tax lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia in 1984, and beginning in 1985, Mr. Stein practiced in New York, primarily with Weil, Gotshal & Manges, representing numerous public, private and Fortune 1000 companies, leveraged buyout and private equity firms, borrowers and lenders.
In 1992, Mr. Stein became the General Counsel of Westpoint Stevens, Inc., then one of the largest publicly held textile manufacturers in the United States, playing a lead role over several years in that company’s emergence from bankruptcy and recapitalization. He then spent eight years with a private equity investment firm in New York investing in real estate related and specialty finance companies, with a particular focus on under-performing assets and companies, complex turnarounds and restructurings, and other corporate renewal transactions. During that period, Mr. Stein was a member of the founding executive team of a publicly traded consumer finance company, with lead responsibility for the company’s corporate finance and loan securitization financings, as well as its IPO. He served as Chairman and CEO of that company for 9 years.
In addition to his legal and private equity investment activities, Mr. Stein has served in numerous executive roles throughout his career, including Chairman, CEO, CFO, and General Counsel and as a member of the boards of directors of numerous public and private companies. In 1998 Mr. Stein founded Crestwalk Capital Advisors LLC, a financial and investment advisory firm focused on underperforming companies, assets, restructurings and workouts, with an emphasis on real estate and financial services companies and assets. In the mid-2000’s, Mr. Stein served as Managing Director of Kimco Realty Corporation’s Select Investments portfolio, where he had principal responsibility for Kimco’s proprietary real estate opportunity fund, focused on investing in real estate and related securities involving opportunistic special circumstances, including various secondary market investments, under-performing mortgage loans, secured bank debt and corporate securities, and negotiated transactions (property acquisitions, mortgage loans, sale/leasebacks, joint ventures). In late 2007, Mr. Stein co-founded and served as Managing Director of HCP Real Estate Investors, LLC, the affiliated commercial real estate investment fund of Harbinger Capital Partners, a multi-billion-dollar New York-based hedge fund, focused primarily on opportunistic investments in debt and equity related to commercial real estate.
In 2012, Mr. Stein co-founded VestaPoint Capital, a real estate private equity investment firm that is focused on investments nationwide in two sectors - net leased real estate and multifamily apartment properties. Mr. Stein also served briefly as President of Carlton Strategic Ventures, the principal investment division of The Carlton Group, a privately held real estate investment and merchant bank.
Mr. Stein is a member of the bars of the states of New York and Georgia. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Emory University School of Law. He serves on the Board of Trustees of The Jewish Board of Family & Children’s Services (leading provider of mental health and social welfare services in the City of New York), is on the Board of Directors of Salisbury Housing Committee, Inc.
