As a lawyer, your goal is always to defeat your adversary. So is it preferable to have an adversary who doesn’t know what he is doing?

Typically, no.

Litigation requires cooperation between adversaries. And when your adversary doesn’t understand the case, it can result in significantly more time and effort to get to the same place.
